When we think of endangered animals, we hear “save the pandas” and turn off your air conditioning for the polar bears! But do we ever hear about organisms in our backyard? This thrifted dress is a combination of patchwork cyanotypes of plants from my backyard and embroidered endangered animals from Massachusetts. Ranging from moths to birds and even reptiles, this piece showcases the fragility of our local ecosystems. In reality, we are living amongst a mass extinction and it starts with us. The form of the dress centers the human body–highlighting our individual responsibility and humans’ role in threatening these animals. Hiding in the left pocket is the embroidered feet of the Heath Hen, an extinct bird from New England last seen on Martha’s Vineyard. Each animal has its name embroidered in close proximity.
